A proposed new charter school in Philadelphia would be run by a coalition that includes State Reps. John Taylor and William Keller, as well as Philadelphia Parking Authority Executive Director Vince Fenerty.
The three are tied by their past and present employment of shadowy political consultant Marty O’Rourke, who seems to be popping up everywhere these days. All of the above have been involved in the process of transforming the PPA into the greatest patronage machine known to man.
The school would be called Philadelphia Polytechnic Charter School, should it get approval from the School Reform Commission, which it surely will given the powerful forces behind it. It would be an excellent addition to the PPA’s machine, giving school leaders the ability to dole out jobs and contracts to their friends and family, all using taxpayer money.
It gets better- O’Rourke also works for City Controller Alan Butkovitz, and by many accounts is actually the real power in charge of the controller’s office. Guess what city agency would be auditing the charter?
This is an example of the dark side of charter schools, which are supposed to be an avenue for children to escape troubled public schools but are instead used by corrupt lawmakers to dole out public money to politically connected individuals.
Witness the scandal last year when Dwight “Pay to Play” Evans tried to hand off Martin Luther King High and the lucrative charter contract for running it to his campaign donors at Foundations, Inc.
It was only a matter of time before the PPA stuck its greedy, patronage-laden mitts in the piggy bank.
